“Watchman” fans are already rabid for tickets to the new movie with advance ticket sales for Fandango blistering the sales charts, according to a news release.
Dozens of showtimes for the midnight screenings on Thursday are sold out on Fandango, from Albany, Georgia to Dublin, California, according to a news release.
Opening nationwide on March 6, “Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the Doomsday Clock–which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union–moves closer to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the outlawed, but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach , uncovers a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with catastrophic consequences for the future.
Over the weekend, Fandango surveyed nearly 1,000 moviegoers planning to watch the “Watchmen.” Among the findings:
* 60% have read the “Watchmen” graphic novel;
* 85% say the online “Watchmen” clips and trailers made them more excited to see the movie;
* 57% plan to see “Watchmen” with a group of friends;
* 71% are planning a get together before or after the movie;
* 85% had seen director Zack Snyder’s previous movie, “300,” on the big screen;
* 73% are male; 65% are 18-34.
As a bonus, moviegoers purchasing tickets for “Watchmen” or “Watchmen: The IMAX Experience “on Fandango will receive a free download of bonus content on iTunes, including the first chapter of the “Watchmen Motion Comics” plus a sneak peek of “Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter. “Details of the promotion are available at www.fandango.com/promo/watchmen.
The motion comic takes the graphic novel and adds simple animation to the comic book as well as voice actors, delivering the comic book in a simple cartoon style for fans.
“Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter” tells the story of a mariner who survives an attack from the dreaded pirates of the Black Freighter, but his struggle to return home to warn about it has a horrific cost. The story ran alongside the “Watchmen” graphic novel’s story, but Snyder dropped the tale from the film for several reasons, including the movie’s running time.
“Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter” is an “R” rated cartoon and the mariner is voiced by Gerard Butler from “Rocknrolla.”
