This is an early cut of a trailer for our circus documentary, “Tearing Down the Tent,” back before we started editing the entire film.

It’s an early draft, but still captures the feel of the movie we wanted to make, and I’m happy to say that even if this is an old trailer it still captures the feel of the film. …continue reading “Tearing Down the Tent” trailer

I’m not sure, but it really does seem like people are sharing a renewed interest in the circus arts. Or at least that’s what it seems lately when I go looking for stories for ModernFilmZine and keep finding more press releases related to circuses.

I already talked about PBS’ “Circus” series, slated for fall of 2010, and now going to one of my news sites I’ve found out that Cirque Eloize opened for the NHL All Star Game at the Bell Center.

The NHL commissioned the Special Events Division of Cirque Eloize to design an act as part of the
opening ceremony for the 57th All Star Game held January 25 at the Bell Center in Montreal. …continue reading Renewed interest in circus arts on the rise?

Death Ray Films and Maya Entertainment are teaming up to bring the Dark Horse comic book “El Zombo Fantasma” to the big screen in a live action movie.

“El Zombo Fantasma,” was published by Dark Horse Comics in 2005 and created by David Wilkins and Kevin Munroe, according to a news release.

“Zombo started years ago as just a geeky idea between two friends who worked at the same video game company,” says Munroe. “But Dave and I always knew that the property had a broader appeal than just its publishing roots, and now we’ll see it finally reach an entirely new audience. I’m thrilled to be a part of creating this new breed of superhero for the big screen.” …continue reading Dark Horse Comics “El Zombo” headed for the big screen

STAFF REPORTS

Marvel Entertainment, the company responsible for the hit film franchises  “X-Men,” and “Spiderman” is being sued in a $750 million lawsuit, according to a news release.

Attorney Martin Garbus, Esq., filed the complaint against Marvel Entertainment and its chairman Isaac Perlmutter, as well as Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel’s major superhero character. The complaint also names former Marvel Studio head Avi Arad.

Arad has been producer of such films as “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

Stan Lee Media, Inc. shareholders contend that Lee and Perlmutter,  with Lee’s partner Arthur Lieberman and former Marvel Studios president Avi Arad, improperly colluded to hide and misappropriate financial interests in Lee’s creations assigned to Stan Lee Media in 1998 and reaffirmed in 1999.

Nina Paley’s “Sita Sings the Blues” has been an Internet hit, playing at film festivals around the world. But the film, somehow has not found major theatrical distribute. And ever since Paley has gone on the film festival circuit she’s learned a few reasons why.

Here are the nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards. Along with the nominations I have also added my thoughts and personal choices on who should win, as well as a “Where is?” category for movies that I felt should have at least been recognized.

And the nominee’s are…

Best actor:

Richard Jenkins – “The Visitor”

Frank Langella – “Frost/Nixon”

Sean Penn – “Milk”

Brad Pitt – “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”

Mickey Rourke – “The Wrestler”

All good choices, though I still need to see “The Visitor” and “Benjamin Button”. Personally for me, it’s a toss up between Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke. If I had to pick; Rourke.

Where is? Colin Farrell for “In Bruges.”

Best Actress

Anne Hathaway – “Rachel Getting Married”

Angelina Jolie – “Changeling”

Melissa Leo – “Frozen River”

Meryl Streep – “Doubt”

Kate Winslet – “The Reader” …continue reading Academy Award Nominations Announced
